THE GOSPEL OF CYRUS ACCORDING TO CYRUS

BY CHRIS TALBOTT
DIRECTED BY ALYSE ROTHMAN
WITH DALLAS ROBERTS

God’s commandment to Cyrus: Be continually drunk. Thus ordained by a voice from a hole in the ground, Cyrus sings us the backwater story of his divination and downfall. A dark and witty fusion of poetry and song, The Gospel of Cyrus According to Cyrus is an avant-garde cabaret-story, set in the countryside with nothing but a bottle of whiskey, a broken gun and an approaching posse.

Cyrus and His band originally came together for the 1998 New York International Fringe Festival to tease out a potential hybrid of theatre, American folk culture and music. They’ve come up with a musical liturgy somewhere between the counties of mountain gospel and funk.
